Nottingham Forest have reportedly emerged as a potential contender to secure the services of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher before the winter transfer window slams shut.
According to The Athletic’s Daniel Taylor via his X account, Nottingham Forest have approached Liverpool to ask about the availability of shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher before the window shuts at 11 pm.
Nottingham Forest Remain Active in the Market
It has been said that even at the start of January, Nuno Espirito Santo did not expect to be in the market for a new goalkeeper. Well, it would appear as though this situation has now gone full circle, with Forest on the hunt for a new goalkeeper in the final hours of deadline day.
The situation has now become perilous with Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos, both of whom arrived in the summer, and they have had their fair share of tough moments so far. Wayne Hennessey is third-choice, while Ethan Horvath remains on the books but could depart this month after being left out of the 25-man Premier League squad.
As per Taylor, they have made a bid for Wolfsburg’s Koen Casteels and tried twice to sign Sam Johnstone, while Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale seems like an unrealistic option this late in the winter window. Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher is also someone they are looking at.
Having emerged as a reliable backup for Liverpool in recent years, including 11 appearances in place of Alisson this season, Kelleher has ambitions of becoming No. 1 in the near future, with him having turned 25 years old in November.
Due to the level of competition at Anfield, with Alisson the best goalkeeper in world football, there is little chance of the Irishman breaking through full-time. That has raised the prospect of a permanent switch, which was widely expected to have happened last summer, only for Jurgen Klopp to block any exit.
While the promise of a starting berth at Norttingham Forest could be a tempting proposition for the Reds’ goalkeeper, the ball is firmly in Liverpool’s court, with over two years left on his remaining contract.
