Barcelona set to monitor Yankuba Minteh at AFCON

Barcelona will run the rule over 19-year-old Newcastle United prodigy Yankuba Minteh, on loan at Feyenoord, at the Africa Cup of Nations.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Yankuba Minteh is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions have dispatched a scout to monitor the 19-year-old prodigy, who has spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Feyenoord from Newcastle United.

Who is Yankuba Minteh?

Yankuba Minteh has been on the rise since arriving in Europe 18 months ago. The Gambian midfield sensation spent most of his formative years in his homeland before joining Odense BK. His spell in Denmark helped him rise in prominence before Newcastle United snapped him up last summer.

But the Magpies immediately loaned him out to Feyenoord. However, the move has not worked as well as he would have liked, as he has managed only 821 minutes of game time across 18 appearances thus far this term. Nonetheless, the 19-year-old has given a good account of himself at the Dutch club, chipping in with four goals and two assists.

The youngster’s progress at Feyenoord has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many high-profile clubs, including Barcelona. And the report by Mundo Deportivo has revealed that the reigning La Liga champions are running the rule over Yankuba Minteh at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Barcelona Tracking Yankuba Minteh

The Catalan giants are in the market for a midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window. They have not filled Sergio Busquets’s void since his departure last summer. So, it behoves Barcelona to invest in a midfielder, with Thomas Partey recently emerging as a target.

But Minteh will fit a different profile as he is a more attacking midfielder. He can also feature on the flanks. So, with Ferran Torres and Raphinha facing an uncertain future, Barcelona can do with Yankuba Minteh as the long-term replacement.

The Blaugrana will run the rule over the 19-year-old Newcastle United prodigy at the Africa Cup of Nations. With game time coming at a better rate in the continental competition, the teenage sensation can give a good account of himself in front of Barcelona’s scouts. But Newcastle United will unlikely entertain any offers for a player they put much faith in last summer.
