Newcastle United reject Atletico Madrid loan approach for Callum Wilson

Newcastle United have reportedly knocked back a surprise loan bid from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid for No. 9 Callum Wilson.

According to Daily Mail, Newcastle United have rejected a shock loan offer from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid for prolific striker Callum Wilson. However, the Magpies’ tight FFP situation could force them to sell the England international if the Colchoneros return with a permanent offer, with the 31-year-old open to talks if a deal could be agreed between the two clubs.

Could there be Shock Sales by Newcastle United?

It is all kicking off on Tyneside. The clock continues to tick down on the January transfer window with the Magpies yet to do any business as they continue to be linked with Kalvin Phillips following a season-ending injury to Joelinton. But they have not made any moves in the market as they continue to struggle with the financial fair play stranglehold.

While bringing in at least one fresh face through the door this January will be what many fans want to see, they cannot sign players before offloading some. And it is the potential exit of another player that continues to drive the rumour mill this January, with clubs looking to exploit their situation.

Kieran Trippier was the first name that has been suggested, with Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel keen to reunite him with his former Tottenham teammate Harry Kane. But a new report from the Mail’s Craig Hope now claims that Wilson could be one of the players on his way out of the club in the summer if not in January amid interest from Atletico Madrid.

Callum Wilson Set for La Liga Move?

Callum Wilson has been a brilliant servant to the club and has scored 46 goals in 102 appearances for the North East outfit since joining them back in 2020 for a bargain £20 million. With seven Premier League goals from 14 appearances this season, he still offers a lot in terms of his strike-rate in front of goal.

But his niggling injury issues and age mean that if they can get a decent fee for him, it is worth considering. Wilson also has just 18 months left on his contract, and Newcastle United will not want to let him leave for free. So a move within the next six months is ideal for the Magpies.

Having said that, Newcastle will not loan out their striker or sell him on the cheap, as Alexander Isak is Eddie Howe’s only other natural option in the striking department.

It is not mentioned whether Atletico Madrid will return with another bid given they have financial issues of their own. But the Toon would be tempted to sell if they can recoup a big chunk of their initial investment in the former Bournemouth man.
