Arsenal continue to push for Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz amid talks of a contract renewal.
According to Football Insider, Premier League giants Arsenal and Liverpool are very interested in Douglas Luiz and continue to push for his services in the windows of late.
The 25-year-old has been one of the best midfielders in the English top flight this season and is aiding their surprise push for a top-four finish. With his contract winding down in two years, where the Villans finish this season could determine the player’s future.
As things stand Villa are in no rush to offer Luiz fresh terms. This is good news for Arsenal as they continue to push for his signature. The Gunners continue to be thwarted but it does not appear to have scared them away.
A central midfielder who is also capable of performing as a number six, Luiz is a powerful presence in the middle of the park. His athleticism and physicality endear him to the rigours of the Premier League and in the right system could help bridge the gap between the midfield and the defence.
He is thought to be on the radar of Spanish giants Barcelona as well.
Signing Declan Rice for a club record fee certainly has made Arsenal a more formidable side in the middle of the park. But this defensive strength has come at the cost of the dynamism offered by the more mobile Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka. Adding Luiz’s mobility alongside Rice’s defensive prowess will certainly ramp up Arsenal’s brand of football.
The Gunners have ground to cover if they are to secure a long-awaited Premier League title this season. They should at the very least make it to the top four, retaining the status of a UEFA Champions League club for a second successive season.
This will be music to the ears of Luiz who appears to be keen to play in the continent’s top competition. Arsenal could very well offer him just that come next summer and given his fast expiring contract, Villa could also be forced into a corner when it comes to negotiations.
Arsenal are showing little reluctance in keeping up their interest in Luiz. While it is debatable if an agreement can be reached this January, a summer transfer could very well appear more doable.
