Andriy Lunin is reportedly open to signing a new contract with Real Madrid, but the Merengues are yet to offer one to the 24-year-old.
According to a report by Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, Andriy Lunin has made a decision on his Real Madrid future. The 24-year-old is open to signing a new contract with Los Blancos. But the Spanish giants are yet to offer a deal to the resurgent goalkeeper.
Andriy Lunin and his Real Madrid Journey
Andriy Lunin has endured a largely frustrating stint since joining Real Madrid from Zorya Luhansk. When he arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Ukrainian international was one of Europe’s most promising young goalkeepers. But he has had to suffice with getting game time whenever Thibaut Courtois has been on the sidelines.
Such has been the excellence of the first-choice Real Madrid goalkeeper that Lunin barely featured for them before this season. Loan spells at CD Leganes, Real Valladolid, and Real Oviedo did not help the 24-year-old and his cause either. In addition, his frustration started boiling over in the early days of the 2023/24 season.
While Courtois sustained a long-term knee issue ahead of the 2023/24 season, they signed Kepa Arrizabalaga as an emergency cover. And the Spaniard became the first-choice goalkeeper for Real Madrid in the first few months of the campaign. But an injury to Kepa has turned Lunin’s fortunes around.
The 24-year-old has been resurgent in the last few weeks, enjoying an excellent record of five clean sheets in 11 outings thus far, conceding only seven goals. That has helped Andriy Lunin, with Real Madrid contemplating keeping hold of him beyond the summer transfer window. And recent reports have pointed to an impending contract renewal offer from Real Madrid.
Set to Sign a New Contract?
But the report by Mario Cortegana has revealed that the Merengues are yet to make an offer to Lunin. Nonetheless, the 24-year-old is open to signing a new contract with Real Madrid after turning his fortunes around.
Meanwhile, the Spanish giants have potential candidates, including Randall Rodriguez, on their radar to replace Andriy Lunin if the two parties do not find a common ground. So, it will be interesting to see if the Ukrainian international remains at Real Madrid beyond the 2023/24 season.
