Premier League heavyweights Chelsea have reportedly offered €85 million to sign Viktor Gyokeres, but Sporting CP turned it down.
According to a report by Record, as relayed by Sport Witness, Viktor Gyokeres is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues have tabled a bid worth €85 million to sign the Sporting CP striker. But the Portuguese giants have knocked back the offer, pointing to the Swede’s release clause of €100 million.
The Rise of Viktor Gyokeres
Viktor Gyokeres has taken no time to make his mark for Sporting CP, immediately establishing himself as a pivotal figure for the club. The 25-year-old rose to prominence during his stint with Coventry City, regularly featuring among the top scorers in the EFL Championship.
But the Swedish international has taken his game up several notches at Sporting CP, spearheading the club’s charge for the Liga Portugal title. He has contributed to 30 goals in 24 appearances thus far, finding the back of the net 20 times while providing 10 assists.
Gyokeres’s progress at Sporting CP has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many high-profile clubs, particularly in the Premier League. Recent reports have linked the Swede with Manchester United and Arsenal. But he is also a target for West London club Chelsea.
London Calling?
The Blues have been the most active club in the market under the Todd Boehly-led regime. But they have been frugal scorers in the two seasons thus far under the current ownership. Despite signing over two dozen players, Chelsea’s goalscoring struggles are not going away. So, it behoves them to dip their toes in the market for a striker.
Viktor Gyokeres has thus emerged as a viable target for Chelsea. And they have submitted a bid worth €85 million to sign the Sporting CP striker. But the Portuguese giants have knocked the offer back, insisting he will only leave if a club triggers his release clause of €100 million.
But Chelsea will have to convince Gyokeres to swap Lisbon with Chelsea to secure his services. That brings a stumbling block as the 25-year-old is unsure of moving to the Premier League right now. It will be interesting to see if Chelsea can turn the player’s head and bring him to Stamford Bridge.
