Benfica have an agreement in place with Manchester United for the services of 20-year-old full-back Alvaro Fernandez.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Alvaro Fernandez is all set to join Benfica as the Portuguese club have agreed terms with Manchester United for his transfer. His loan spell at Granada will be cut short, and the 20-year-old will be making the move to Portugal in the ongoing window.
Alvaro Fernandez at Manchester United: The Story So Far
Alvaro Fernandez was a part of the Real Madrid youth ranks before joining Manchester United in the summer of 2020. He has since gone up the ranks and has been promoted to the first team. But, he has been out on loan thus far this term, and Erik ten Hag does not really count on him.
The Red Devils were without both their left-backs at the start of the season, and ten Hag could have handed Fernandez an opportunity. But, the Manchester United boss decided against it and signed Sergio Reguilon on loan to cover for the injuries. The 20-year-old was then sent to Granada on a season-long loan. But it seems the move will be cut short as Benfica have entered the race.
Since joining the Spanish club, he has featured in a total of 14 matches and has racked up less than 600 minutes. He has not had enough opportunities, something that has not pleased Manchester United at all. And while they were considering the idea of calling him back, Benfica were keen on acquiring the services.
A New Adventure Beckons
The Portuguese club want to bolster their defence. They want depth at left-back and feel the 20-year-old is someone who can help their cause in the long run. He will only get better with time. As a result, they were willing to invest in him and managed to strike a deal with the Red Devils.
Both clubs have an agreement in place for the transfer of the Spanish youth international. Personal terms with the player were already agreed. And, according to Romano, the former Real Madrid defender will join Benfica on loan until the end of the season.
But the Portuguese giants do have an option to buy him on a permanent basis. The documents are being exchanged at this stage, and the player’s medical at his new club has already been booked.
