West Ham United are reportedly keen on signing 25-year-old English attacker Marcus Edwards from Sporting CP.
A report from A Bola has claimed that Marcus Edwards is on the radar of West Ham United, with David Moyes looking to bring in attacking reinforcements this month.
The Rise of Marcus Edwards
Edwards has established himself as a key performer for Sporting CP in Liga Portugal, and he has six goals and five assists to his name across all competitions this season. He is capable of operating as a winger, a centre-forward as well as a central attacking midfielder.
His ability to slot into multiple roles will be an added bonus for the Hammers if they manage to secure this signature. The Englishman has been linked with a return to the Premier League in the past as well. He had an underwhelming spell with Tottenham Hotspur, and the North London club have been linked with a potential move for him in the past.
West Ham United Want Marcus Edwards
It will be interesting to see if West Ham come forward with a concrete proposal to sign Marcus Edwards. He has a €60 million release clause in his contract, and Sporting CP are unlikely to accept a knockdown fee for him it remains to be seen whether West Ham are prepared to break the bank for him.
The 25-year-old has shown his quality with Sporting CP in Portugal and in the European competitions. There is no doubt that he could be a quality winger in the Premier League as well. However, the €60 million asking price is quite steep, and West Ham will hope to negotiate a more reasonable fee.
The Hammers have done reasonably well in the Premier League this season, and they will look to secure Europa League qualification at the very least. So, they need to improve their squad in January in order for that to happen.
Jarrod Bowen has carried the goalscoring and creative burden for West Ham this season. He needs more support from his teammates, and the arrival of Edwards would improve West Ham immensely. He could form a solid partnership with Bowen and Mohammed Kudus.
The 25-year-old will be determined to prove himself in the Premier League after failing to make his mark in English football with Tottenham, and his determination to succeed will be an added bonus for the Hammers.
