Aston Villa have been offered the chance to sign the AS Roma star Leonardo Spinazzola.
According to Calciomercato, Premier League high-flyers Aston Villa have been offered the opportunity to land AS Roma star Leonardo Spinazzola in the ongoing January transfer window.
The 30-year-old is currently in the final year of his contract and an extension is yet to be put on the table. With Roma unlikely to make one, it makes sense for them to cash in on the veteran. Them offering his services to Aston Villa more or less signifies the end of his career in the Italian capital.
The Italians need to bring in the money they can to adhere to Financial Fair Play regulations and cashing in on Spinazzola is certainly an option. His recent spell of form also gives the Serie A giants enough conviction to bring their association to an end.
While Saudi Arabia could be a potential destination, the player, for his part is in no mood to move away from Europe. In this regard, Villa have a major point in their favour should they make a move.
Despite potentially not having to pay much to land Spinazzola, Villa appear to be sceptical about making a move for the 30-year-old. One cannot blame Unai Emery and Co for being cautious given the player’s recent run of poor form.
Spinnazola has seen his career nosedive since suffering an Achilles tendon rupture at Euro 2020. He has since lost his spot in the Italian squad and also fallen down the pecking order at club level. The fact that now Roma consider him expendable speaks volumes about Jose Mourinho’s interest in keeping him.
Given his struggles, a move to the physically demanding Premier League might not be the easy jump to make. Emery already has two options at the left-back spot in Lucas Digne and Alex Moreno. Matty Cash and Callum Chambers occupy the right-back spot, providing the Villians with reasonable depth.
While Spinazzola can play both roles, he is far from a starter and will at best be an alternative that can be used in rotation. Whether he is someone Villa need to spend money on right now is debatable.
