Liverpool keen on Fluminense defender Nino

Liverpool are eyeing a deal for Fluminense star Nino.

Premier League giants Liverpool are keen to rain Brazilian behemoths Fluminense for defensive star Nino, this is according to Fichajes.

The Reds find themselves at the top of the Premier League standings heading into 2024. Jurgen Klopp’s men are well-placed to mount a title challenge and bringing in the right players mid-season will certainly aid them in the effort.

One position that needs reinforcing is at centre-back. The Reds will be without Joel Matip for the upcoming few months while Joe Gopmezis more of a utility player also providing cover out on the flanks. Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson are also struggling with injuries while Trent Alexander-Arnold has no reliable backup at right-back. Asking the Englishman to cover all positions at the back could prove draining in the long term.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are Klopp’s first-choice centre-back pairing. Jarell Quansah has proven to be a breakout option but the lack of cover can be exposed should the Reds continue to fight on all fronts.

While the Reds have been long linked with a move for Fluminense star Andre Trinande, those links have now gone cold. However, a raid on the Brazilian giants could still be in the offing. Nino has after all made a telling impression in recent months.

The 26-year-old played a key role in Fluminense’s Copa Libertadores win and their run to the final of the FIFA Club World Cup. The centre-back has a termination clause of only €7 million, mere pennies in today’s market. With his contract expiring in 2024, Liverpool could also find themselves at an advantage when it comes to negotiations.

Liverpool have in recent years discovered gems in the transfer market, who have gone on to punch above their weight. Wataru Endo continues to win hearts and if all goes well, Nino could also be part of Klopp’s new-look Reds side. It would not come as a surprise if these two surprising bargain signings play a key role in the Merseysiders securing a record-equalling 20th league title.
