Real Madrid will reportedly look to re-sign 23-year-old Spanish centre-back Mario Gila on loan from Serie A club Lazio in January.
According to a report by SER Deportivos, Mario Gila is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The Merengues are in the market for a centre-back heading into the January transfer window. And they have zeroed in on the 23-year-old Lazio centre-back over a possible loan move with a purchase option clause.
Who is Mario Gila?
Mario Gila has made gradual progress since joining Lazio from Real Madrid in July 2022. The Spanish defender spent his formative years with six Spanish clubs, passing through the youth divisions at Santa Perpetua de Moguda, CE Sabadell, CF Mollet UE, CF Damm, Espanyol, and Real Madrid.
The 23-year-old graduated from Real Madrid’s fabled La Fabrica division but could not establish a foothold in the first-team squad at the Santiago Bernabeu. Gila made only two appearances for the Real Madrid first team, mainly representing the Castilla side during his time at the Spanish club.
But the Spaniard has not been a regular for Lazio, managing only 20 appearances in the last 18 months, with eight outings coming this season. But Gila’s performances for the Serie A club have captured the attention of his former club, Real Madrid. And Los Blancos will look to secure his services in the January transfer window.
A Return to Real Madrid on the Cards?
The Merengues are in the market for a centre-back heading into the January transfer window. Carlo Ancelotti has only two fit centre-backs in his squad after David Alaba recently picked up a long-term knee injury. With Eder Militao also on the sidelines due to a similar issue, Real Madrid can do with a centre-back this winter.
Several central defenders, including Robert Renan, have thus emerged on Real Madrid’s radar over a possible move in the January transfer window. But the Spanish giants have also set their sights on Mario Gila. And they will look to re-sign the 23-year-old Lazio defender from the Serie A club in a loan deal.
It is unclear if Lazio will be open to a loan deal in the January transfer window. But Real Madrid will include a purchase option clause in the proposal for the Spanish defender. It will be interesting to see if Gila returns to his former clubs next month.
