Chelsea might reportedly look to sign 26-year-old Polish international Matty Cash from Aston Villa in the January transfer window.
According to a report by 90min, Matty Cash is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are in the market for a right-back heading into the January transfer window. And they have set their sights on the 26-year-old Aston Villa defender.
Who is Matty Cash?
Matty Cash had humble beginnings as he spent his formative years away from the spotlight. A native of Slough, he passed through Wycombe Wanderers, FAB Academy, and Nottingham Forest before graduating from the latter club’s youth division. But he has risen to prominence since joining Aston Villa in September 2020.
The 26-year-old has featured regularly for Aston Villa in the last three years. But he has been in and out of the team this term, starting 19 of the 28 games played by the Midlands outfit. However, that has not reduced Cash’s stature in the market, with Chelsea interested in signing him from Aston Villa.
Chelsea Calling?
Chelsea greeted the arrival of Malo Gusto in the summer transfer window after sealing the deal to sign him in January. But the young Frenchman has battled poor form and fitness issues in his first season with the West London club. In addition, Reece James’s injury troubles are not going away anytime soon.
James became the Chelsea captain ahead of the 2023/24 season after the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta. But his campaign is already over after he picked up his second hamstring injury this term. So, it behoves Chelsea to invest in a right-back heading into the January transfer window. Matty Cash has thus emerged as a viable target.
The 26-year-old has featured on Chelsea’s radar for a long time. But a move has not materialised in the last two transfer windows. However, that will have to change in January, with Gusto and James not providing dependable thus far this season.
It is unclear how Aston Villa will respond to an offer from Chelsea. But the Polish international is a viable target for the West London club heading into the January transfer window. So, it will be interesting to see how this story progresses in the coming weeks.
