Aston Villa are keen to land Timo Werner on loan in the January transfer window
According to Football Insider, Premier League side Aston Villa are keen to land RB Leipzig star Timo Werner on loan in the upcoming 2024 January transfer window.
The German international was one of the biggest names in the Bundesliga before making his way to Chelsea in 2020. Whilst he won trophies during his short stint at Stamford Bridge, the two-year stay in the Premier League was underwhelming.
Now back in the Bundesliga, Werner continues to rebuild his reputation as a serial goalscorer. It has brought him onto the radar of Villa boss Unai Emery who is in the midst of a surprise tilt for the Premier League title.
As things stand, Ollie Watkins is the lone striker on the Villans roster. This makes signing another striker in January a priority. Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho and Werner are the two names on their radar.
While a permanent deal could prove difficult midway through the current season, a loan agreement could be reached. It can eventually pave the way for Villa and Leipzig to work out a permanent solution once the 2023/24 season comes to an end.
A superstar attacker is the target next summer and Werner could very well audition for the role. More so, the German ace is capable of playing anywhere along the frontline, something that will suit the Midland club’s new look mobile attacking setup.
Werner has seen his stock fall since the disastrous spell at Chelsea. A return to the Premier League is a massive opportunity for him to show his doubters that the ride has now turned. Leading Villa to a top-four finish will further cement his reputation as a player to be reckoned with.
With John Duran set to leave Villa, the lack of cover upfront remains a major concern. With Ollie Watkins unlikely to play every minute, it is imperative that Emery brings in reinforcements. Werner certainly is a better alternative to Iheanacho. Whether Villa can tempt him remains to be seen.
