Newcastle United will reportedly compete with Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United for 23-year-old Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley.
According to a report by TEAMtalk, Matt O’Riley is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies have been in the market for a midfielder in the wake of Sandro Tonali’s long-term suspension. Meanwhile, the Celtic midfielder, valued at around £25 million, is also a target for Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.
Who is Celtic Metronome Matt O’Riley?
Matt O’Riley has established himself as one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership since joining Celtic. A former trainee at Fulham, the 23-year-old spent over a decade at the West London club. But he has risen to prominence during his ongoing stint with Celtic, arriving from MK Dons in January 2022.
The Danish international has come leaps and bounds in the last two years, becoming a mainstay in the middle of the park for Celtic. O’Riley has turned out nearly 100 times while chipping in with 17 goals and 24 assists. Meanwhile, the youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of Tottenham, West Ham United, and Newcastle United.
Premier League Calling?
Newcastle United will look to sign a midfielder in the January transfer window after summer signing Sandro Tonali picked up a long-term ban for flouting anti-betting rules. Several central midfielders have thus emerged on the Tyneside club’s radar. But Matt O’Riley is also an option worth considering, with Celtic demanding a club-record £25 million.
As for Tottenham, the North London club might lose Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the January transfer window. In addition, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr will embark on their nation’s Africa Cup of Nations campaigns next month. So, the Celtic midfielder has emerged as a viable target for Tottenham.
Meanwhile, West Ham can also do with a midfielder in January despite signing James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez in the summer transfer window. Matt O’Riley has thus emerged as one of their targets. But it is unclear if West Ham can afford to pay £25 million to secure his services.
But Tottenham should be in a position to afford O’Riley’s price tag. But recent reports have claimed that the 23-year-old Danish international is happy and settled at Celtic. So, a winter move might not be on the cards even if suitors shell out £25 million to land him.
