Manchester United, Liverpool make contact to sign Khephren Thuram

Liverpool have reportedly made contact with Khephren Thuram and OGC Nice regarding a potential winter swoop for the French defensive midfielder, who is also on the radar of Manchester United.

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Liverpool are reportedly serious about signing Nice defensive midfielder Khephren Thuram in the upcoming January transfer window, but Manchester United are also interested and may hold the upper hand in the Frenchman’s pursuit. The Nice star, who is the son of France legend Lilian Thuram, is regarded as one of the most exciting young prospects in Ligue 1.

Since joining Nice in 2019 from Monaco, he has established himself as one of their most important players and has racked up 150 appearances for the club to date, scoring eight goals and adding 11 assists in the process. His bright performances seem to have caught the attention of several top European clubs.

Liverpool, for one, seriously considered signing the talented enforcer in the summer transfer window but decided to focus on other targets as Jurgen Klopp revamped Liverpool’s midfield by bringing in the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch.

As per Calciomercato, Klopp is still keen to add one more central midfielder to his squad, and it appears the manager has identified Thuram as his top target. The Reds’ have even made contact with the player’s representatives and Nice for a potential transfer.

He has made 12 appearances so far this season. Nice have lost just one game, with Thuram helping his team’s title push as they currently sit second in Ligue 1, four points off table-toppers Paris Saint-Germain. If the Frenchman could have a similar impact at Anfield, he could potentially make a huge difference in their bid to reclaim the Premier League crown this season.

Nice won’t want to sell in the middle of what is proving to be quite a promising campaign for them, but should PSG create a significant gap atop Ligue 1 come January, the French side may be tempted to cash in on their prized asset, who is contracted at Allianz Rivera until 2025. Still, the Reds’ will have to stave off interest from the likes of Manchester United and Juventus.

United boss Erik ten Hag decided to bring in Sofyan Amrabat on loan from Fiorentina on deadline day, but the Moroccan has failed to fill the void left by the ageing Casemiro.

The 27-year-old has failed to adjust to the pace of the Premier League, and his underwhelming performances have meant the Red Devils’ are unlikely to make his loan move permanent at the end of the season.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is currently also the owner of Nice, is in advanced talks of a partial takeover and will have a major say in football operations at Old Trafford, so it may be that he will look to bring in key figures who’ve brought success to the Ligue 1 side, and that could include players like Thuram.
