Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United defender Raphael Varane.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich are keen on signing Manchester United defender Raphael Varane. But his £17 million-a-year wages are an issue for the Bundesliga champions.
Varane has been an important player for Manchester United, and he could prove to be a quality acquisition for the Bundesliga champions. The 30-year-old central defender is at the peak of his powers, and he will certainly help Bayern Munich tighten up defensively.
However, Varane’s massive salary could be a major problem. According to Plettenberg, the transfer is looking unrealistic because of the player’s wages. Varane earns around £17 million per season at the Premier League club, and he would have to take a substantial pay cut in order to join the German club.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are already lacking in quality and depth in the defensive unit, and letting the French international leave would be a poor decision. It remains to be seen how the situation develops over the next few weeks.

Manchester United should look to sign a central defender when the transfer window opens in January. Varane and Lisandro Martinez are the only reliable defenders at Old Trafford right now, and the Red Devils need more options at their disposal.
Manchester United have had a mediocre season so far, and they want to finish as high as possible. Selling a key player in January is unlikely to be on their agenda, and any move might have to wait until the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils will need to sign a quality replacement before letting the Frenchman leave. Manchester United could also lose Harry Maguire in the coming months, and they are unlikely to consider a January move for any other defender regardless of the money on offer.

It will be interesting to see if the Frenchman is keen on a move to Bayern Munich in the near future. The Bavarian outfit have a proven track record of competing for major trophies, and Varane could be tempted to try out another adventure at this stage of his career if the right opportunity comes along.
