Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United keen on Ben Godfrey

Tottenham and Newcastle United are considering moves for Ben Godfrey ahead of January, with Everton ready to sell the unwanted defender.

According to 90 Min, Everton are willing to listen to offers for their unwanted defensive star, Ben Godfrey. Tottenham and Newcastle United are keen on the 25-year-old Premier League defender as the dupo looks to add defensive depth to their squad.

Many teams will focus on adding to their squad to improve depth ahead of the second half of the season. Those sitting at the top end of the table are desperate to bring in quality stars to enhance their current team.

Tottenham, for instance, are severely lacking in central defensive depth, which got laid bare during the recent game against Chelsea. Spurs lost their first-choice duo Cristian Romero to a red card, and then Micky van de Ven suffered a blow to his hamstring. To replace them, Ange Postecoglou had to call upon forgotten man Eric Dier and right-back Emerson Royal.

In truth, Tottenham do not have anyone to call upon from the bench who can produce absolute quality without their first-choice stars. Hence, they will enter the January window for a new centre-back with many options already linked by the media.

Galatasaray’s Victor Nelsson remains a target, but Spurs could reignite their interest in Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo. Postecoglou may not want a star defender in the winter window, but someone who can provide quality cover to his current first-choice stars.

Contrastingly, there are links to Juventus’ Gleison Bremer, with many other Premier League rivals interested. Whether the Italian side will let go of such an important player remains the question, but more so of his price tag.

Hence, they might look at someone who could provide depth but also come in when needed. Ben Godfrey could become a solid option, with Everton reportedly open to offers for their unwanted star. The 25-year-old Premier League defender has played only a single minute of league football this season, as Sean Dyche does not trust him.

The Everton boss has preferred to play Jarrad Branthwaite, Michael Keane and James Tarkowski in the central position. Hence, the Toffees could open their doors for sale, bringing in some much-needed funds to improve their financial situation.

Newcastle United are also interested in Godfrey, as per the reports. Much like Tottenham, the Magpies are also facing shortages at the back. They have relied on forgotten club captain Jamal Lascelles to fill in for the injured Sven Botman, as Eddie Howe will surely want a new centre-back in January. There are some links to Andreas Christensen, but Barcelona will not sell in mid-season.

Many other reports have suggested Newcastle United may not have the cash to make a big signing, which could force Howe to look at bargain options. Godfrey represents that category, as Everton may not demand over the odds for the 25-year-old Premier League defender.

Hence, Newcastle and Tottenham will see the wisdom in bringing the Everton man, who could reignite his game in a new surrounding. He will certainly add some depth to an otherwise depleted backline at either club, but all eyes will be on what the Toffees will demand in return.
