Marcos Alonso is reportedly discussing a 2024 move to Atletico Madrid, with his long-term Barcelona future being uncertain.
According to a report by Football Transfers, Marcos Alonso is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The 32-year-old will likely leave Barcelona as a free agent in the 2024 summer transfer window. And he wants to remain at the topmost level and has thus opened talks with Atletico Madrid over a move next year.
Marcos Alonso has been a dependable performer for Barcelona since arriving from Chelsea last year. The West London club terminated his contract and allowed him to leave as a free agent, thus aiding Barcelona’s cause. Since then, the Spaniard has been a reliable backup figure for the Catalan outfit.
But the 32-year-old has never been the first-choice starter for Barcelona, only coming into the team when Xavi Hernandez rests Alejandro Balde. But he has often featured as a centre-back, especially during an injury crisis engulfing the Blaugrana. As for the ongoing season, Alonso has managed only 300 minutes of game time across seven appearances thus far.
Meanwhile, the Spanish defender has entered the final year of his contract with Barcelona. But talks over a new deal have not started, meaning he will likely leave the Blaugrana as a free agent. Premier League clubs reportedly want to sign him in January, but he does not want to depart this winter.
However, Alonso will likely leave Barcelona as a free agent in the 2024 summer transfer window. And he might remain in La Liga beyond the 2023/24 season, with Atletico Madrid keen on signing him. The report has claimed that the veteran full-back and Los Rojiblancos are discussing a 2024 move.
Diego Simeone has two left-backs in his squad, although Reinildo Mandava is a long-term absentee. Meanwhile, Javi Galan faces an uncertain future at the Civitas Metropolitano, with Barcelona recently showing interest in him. So, it is not surprising that Atletico Madrid might enter the market for a left-back in another transfer window.
Marcos Alonso has thus emerged as a viable target for the Colchoneros, who have opened talks with him over a Bosman move. With Barcelona not interested in tying him to a new contract, a free transfer to another big La Liga club is seemingly on the cards.
