AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly contacted 29-year-old Tottenham utility man Eric Dier over a possible January move.
According to a report by Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web, Eric Dier is the subject of interest from AS Roma. Jose Mourinho wants to reunite with the 29-year-old utility man at Stadio Olimpico in the January transfer window. But, the Serie A giants are not entirely convinced about launching the offensive this winter.
Eric Dier has endured a rollercoaster ride since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Sporting CP in July 2014. Now in his tenth season with the North London club, the English international has enjoyed phases where he has been a mainstay, either in the midfield unit or the defence. But his stock has plummeted since Ange Postecoglou arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The 29-year-old utility man has managed only 56 minutes of game time thus far this season. That came against Chelsea on Monday due to a crisis in the central defensive unit. Meanwhile, Dier has entered the final year of his contract with Tottenham and will unlikely sign a new deal with the North London club.
Recent reports have claimed that Dier is ready to run down his contract with Tottenham and might leave the club as a free agent next summer. But Jose Mourinho wants to bring the English utility man to AS Roma in the January transfer window.
Reports last month suggested that Dier was ready to move to Italy to reunite with Jose Mourinho. The 29-year-old enjoyed a solid spell when the Portuguese tactician was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. So, it is hardly surprising that he is ready to play under Mourinho again.
The former Tottenham manager is pushing to bring the English international to Stadio Olimpico. But the AS Roma board members are hesitant to sanction a January move. The main reason for the stance is Dier’s expiring contract, considering they can sign him for free next summer. In addition, Mourinho’s uncertain situation at the Serie A club means it does not make sense to commit to a winter signing.
Mourinho is eager to sign a centre-back in the January transfer window due to Chris Smalling’s injury-enforced absence. Meanwhile, Tottenham might not stand in Dier’s way and will push for his January exit. So, it will be interesting to see if the 29-year-old utility man moves to AS Roma to reunite with Mourinho.
