Manchester City open to loaning Kalvin Phillips amid Newcastle United links

Manchester City eyeing Pablo Barrios as Martin Zubimendi alternative.

Newcastle United are looking to sign the 27-year-old Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan in January.

According to a report by Football Insider, Newcastle United are keen on having Kalvin Phillips in their ranks. The 27-year-old midfielder is way down the pecking order at Manchester City and he is looking for a move away from the club in search of regular first-team minutes.

Phillips came through the ranks at Leeds United and made quite a name for himself while playing for them. He played a big part in helping them gain promotion to the Premier League back in the day. On the back of his impressive performances for Leeds, Manchester City acquired his services in the summer of 2022.

The 27-year-old was expected to have a big role under Pep Guardiola. But, the move hasn’t gone according to plan. He hasn’t been able to win the trust of the Spanish manager and has had very limited opportunities during his 15-month-long stay at the club.

City were ready to offload him in the summer but he wanted to fight for a spot in the playing XI. However, nothing much has changed over the past few months. He has featured in six matches this season but has been on the pitch for just 168 minutes. As a result, the 27-year-old is looking for a move away from the club.

Phillips wants regular first-team football as he looks to maintain his spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euro 2024 in Germany. While there is a lot of interest in the 27-year-old, City won’t let him leave on the cheap.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are one of the clubs interested in him and they are looking to sign him on a short-term loan deal. The Magpies have been forced to look for a new midfielder as their marquee summer signing Sandro Tonali has received a 10-month-long ban.

Tonali was involved in illegal betting and his ban means he won’t feature until the start of next season. As a result, Newcastle are looking to sign a replacement. The Magpies are interested in Phillips’ services but they are looking to bring him in on a short loan deal because of FFP reasons.

The report suggests that City won’t stand in his way and the player would love to join Newcastle. A move away will be a win-win situation for both the player and his parent club. Phillips will get regular first-team minutes while an impressive loan spell could raise his stock and lead to a bidding war in the summer.
