Barcelona will reportedly look to sign 28-year-old World Cup winner Presnel Kimpembe in a Bosman move next summer.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Presnel Kimpembe is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The 28-year-old World Cup winner is in the final year of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. So, the Blaugrana will look to sign him in a Bosman move if he departs from Parc des Princes as a free agent.
Presnel Kimpembe has struggled to find a stable foothold at Paris Saint-Germain since breaking into the club’s first-team squad nearly a decade ago. A graduate of Les Parisiens’ academy, the French international made his first-team bow as a 19-year-old in October 2014.
Since then, the 28-year-old has been in and out of the starting lineup at PSG, only being a regular starter in 2020/21 and 2021/22. Of late, injuries have played spoilsport for Kimpembe, who was a part of France’s World Cup-winning squad at the 2018 edition.
The Frenchman has turned out nearly 250 times thus far for PSG, chipping in with three goals and two assists. But Kimpembe’s long-term future at the Ligue 1 club is uncertain, as he has entered the final year of his contract. Such a situation has captured the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Barcelona.
The report also mentions Serie A heavyweights like AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus as his suitors. But Barcelona will look to land the 28-year-old World Cup winner if he leaves PSG as a free agent. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s interest in him is hardly surprising, considering Inigo Martinez is on the wrong side of 30.
So, the summer signing is only a short-term solution for Barcelona. In addition, the French centre-back is left-footed, making him an appealing target for Xavi Hernandez. The reigning La Liga champions are also likely to find him attractive due to his impending free-agent status.
But with Serie A heavyweights also competing for Kimpembe’s signature, Barcelona will have to move quickly to turn his head. It will be interesting to see if the 28-year-old World Cup winner leaves PSG as a free agent and where he plies his trade next season. Meanwhile, the Catalan giants also have other centre-backs on their radar, including Tiago Djalo.
