Reigning La Liga champions Barcelona are reportedly considering signing 28-year-old Atletico Madrid defender Javi Galan in January.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Javi Galan is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions have reignited their interest in the 28-year-old full-back. Meanwhile, Galan is unsettled at Atletico Madrid due to a lack of game time thus far since arriving from Celta Vigo.
Javi Galan has established himself as one of the most underrated full-backs in La Liga in the last few seasons. The Spaniard rose in prominence during his stint with SD Huesca, making his mark in the 2020/21 season even as the Aragonese club went down to the Segunda Division that term.
The 28-year-old joined Celta Vigo following SD Huesca’s relegation and continued from where he left off after moving to Balaidos. Galan’s performances did not go unnoticed, capturing the attention of high-profile clubs like Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Eventually, Los Rojiblancos signed the player from the Galician club.
Atletico Madrid paid just €5 million to secure Galan’s services this past summer. But the player has struggled to stamp his authority in his short stint thus far, managing only 98 minutes of game time. The situation has left him displeased, and he might agitate for a move away from Civitas Metropolitano. However, the Spanish defender’s stock remains high, with Barcelona still interested.
The reigning La Liga champions currently have two left-backs in their squad. Alejandro Balde is the first-choice left-back, while Marcos Alonso is the designated deputy for the left-back and centre-back spots. However, Alonso’s long-term Barcelona future is uncertain, even though he does not want to leave in January.
But if the Spaniard’s time as a Barcelona player ends in the January transfer window, the Blaugrana will need a replacement. Javi Galan has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona heading into the winter window. But it is unclear if Atletico Madrid will part ways with the 28-year-old defender in January.
The Colchoneros have only utilised his services for a couple of months. But with the Spanish full-back not happy with his situation, anything is possible. It will be interesting to see if Barcelona can move the pieces efficiently to land Galan in the January transfer window.
