Liverpool prioritising Leroy Sane as Mohamed Salah replacement

Liverpool have reportedly identified Bayern Munich’s dazzling winger Leroy Sane as their top target to replace Mohamed Salah.

According to The Mirror, Liverpool have set their sights on Bayern Munich forward Leroy Sane and are prepared to smash the club’s transfer record to buy the Germany international next summer.

Sane is viewed as the perfect replacement for Mohamed Salah, who is set to be the subject of further huge transfer bids from clubs in Saudi Arabia once again in the next summer transfer window.

Liverpool turned down huge offers from the Saudi Pro League in the summer for Salah. Al-Ittihad were willing to pay up to £200 million to make the Egyptian hero the poster boy of Saudi Arabian football. The Reds felt it was too late in the window to sell the 31-year-old, as they would not have had time to bring in an apt replacement.

Despite all the talk, Salah has remained committed to Liverpool, and his work ethic can’t be questioned, having started all eight Premier League matches this season, scoring five goals.

While Liverpool do not want to lose their talismanic player, they know they will not be able to fight off Saudi interest forever considering the life-changing wages on offer. There is also a realisation that a huge transfer fee for a player who will turn 32 next June will allow them to bring in a world-class long-term replacement.

And it appears Sane is the player the Reds boss’ Jurgen Klopp wants if and when Salah leaves the club. The above report says that Liverpool would be prepared to break their transfer record, set when they signed Darwin Nunez from Benfica for £80 million, in order to bring the German international back to the Premier League.

The 27-year-old attacker is in the form of his life and is dazzling in a right-flank role for the reigning Bundesliga champions this season, having scored six goals in the German top-flight and once in the Champions League so far.

He has become a key player for the Bavarians, who will make a new deal for Sane one of their top priorities over the coming months amid reported interest from elsewhere, with his current one expiring in 2025.

Sane is widely seen as one of the most talented wingers in the world, while he also comes with bags of Premier League experience, having spent four years with Manchester City before joining Bayern in 2020 for an initial €45 million.

He won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and three League Cups with the Cityzens, so it’s not a surprise Jurgen Klopp wants to lure his countryman to Anfield.

Having said that, recent reports have suggested Sane is happy in Munich and would be open to extending his stay, which, if it happens, would scupper Liverpool’s transfer plans, while Real Madrid and Barcelona have also been keeping tabs on his situation in recent times.
