Newcastle United want to tie Joelinton to new contract

Newcastle United are reportedly planning to hold contract talks with midfielder Joelinton to secure his long-term future at the club.

Newcastle United have been handing out new deals to as many of their stars as possible this year, and Joelinton is the next player who looks set to earn a new contract, according to Football Insider.

The Magpies are on cloud nine right now after a triumphant return of UEFA Champions League football to St. James’ Park prior to the international break as they thrashed French heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 on Tyneside.

Following their smart recruitment drive since the PIF-led takeover, Newcastle United now have an abundance of top players in their team. The ambitious Toon no longer need to sell their star players to rival clubs to balance their books. Instead, it could be argued that Newcastle is one of the best places to be in the Premier League, as proven by the flurry of recent contract extensions.

Eddie Howe and co. have ensured that the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Callum Wilson, and more recently, Dan Burn, have put pen to paper on new deals, sealing their future at the club, as the former Bournemouth boss look to keep his core intact to give his side the best possible chance of competing on all fronts.

Sporting director Dan Ashworth is not stopping there either. According to reports, the Magpies are planning to open talks with Joelinton, who was a pivotal player in helping the club qualify for the Champions League last season.

The 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder is not even in the last year of his contract, with over 18 months left on his current deal until the summer of 2025, which he signed when arriving from Hoffenheim in 2019 in what was then a club record transfer.

He originally signed as a centre-forward but largely struggled in the position. After scoring his first goal against Tottenham in August, it took him until January to score his second. It was not until the 2020/21 season that the player started to flourish, after moving to a dynamic midfield role under new manager Eddie Howe.

The change saw him win the Newcastle United Player of the Year award for the 2020/21 season, and he has continued his excellent form since. The powerful midfielder has also been a revelation on the left wing when played there, bringing goals and late darts into the box.

That versatility has been crucial, and it is no shock to see Newcastle United want to extend his contract. The kind of improvement he has shown under Howe surely makes him an integral part of the squad at present and in the future.

At 27 years old, he seems to be really hitting his peak form, although he has struggled a bit with injuries this season. Newcastle fans will be eager to see his prime years at the club alongside his dazzling international teammate and close friend, Bruno Guimaraes.
