Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur suffer a major blow in their pursuit of 24-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba.
According to a report by 90min, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have been interested in the services of Edmond Tapsoba for a while now. Both clubs were keen on adding him to their ranks in the winter transfer window but Bayer Leverkusen have decided that they will not sanction any major sales in January.
Tapsoba has been at the German club since the winter of 2020. He has gone from strength to strength over the past few seasons. And, at this point in time, he is amongst the best young defenders in world football. As a result, there is a lot of interest in his services.
Manchester United are one of the clubs keen on having him in their ranks. The Red Devils were interested in him back in the summer window. But, they couldn’t manage to strike a deal for his services. Similar was the situation of Tottenham who were also linked with him. They wanted to add Tapsoba to their squad but failed to make any major progress.
Both the English clubs are still looking for a central defender. They wanted to sign the 24-year-old in the winter for different reasons. Erik ten Hag’s United have suffered quite a few injuries at the back. They want to sign a young defender who can provide cover, start when needed and eventually establish himself as a first-team regular.
Meanwhile, Spurs want to sign the 24-year-old to add depth to their defence. They do not have much depth in the heart of the defence and with Eric Dier likely to leave in the winter, they wanted to add Tapsoba to their squad.
Both clubs were ready to battle it out for his services in the winter. But, they will have to look elsewhere as Bayer Leverkusen have made a decision regarding his future. The German club are in no mood to let any of their first-team players leave in the winter.
Heading into the October international break, Leverkusen are at the top of the Bundesliga and they want to challenge for the title right until the end under the leadership of Xabi Alonso. As a result, they won’t sanction any major sale.
