Fabrizio Romano has opened up on interest from Barcelona and Manchester United in Jeremie Frimpong.

Writing in his Daily Brief for Caught Offside, reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has opened up on the interest in Jeremie Frimpong from European giants Barcelona and Manchester United.

The 22-year-old came through the ranks at Manchester City before earning his senior break at Scottish Premier League giants Celtic. He spent two seasons in Scotland before Bayer Leverkusen came calling in 2021.

It is at the BayArena that Frimpong has come into his own as a dynamic full-back. Blessed with pace and power, he is a crucial cog in Xabi Alonso’s system. The flying Dutchman has one goal and four assists in six games this season for Leverkusen as they continue their stint at the top of the Bundesliga standings.

Frimpong has been subject to interest from several top clubs in the past including Manchester United and Barcelona. The former already have Aaron Wan-0Bissaka and Diogo Dalot in the role but could do with a player who displays more dynamism.

However, Romano has confirmed that while the Red Devils showed interest in 2022, they did not make much of an effort to land the 22-year-old this year. Whether it is because Erik ten Hag is happy with his options in the position or Frimpong does not meet their requirements is debatable.

Barcelona, on the other hand, showed interest but did not consider Frimpong to be a priority. The Spanish champions eyed Joao Cancelo all summer, and the Bayer Leverkusen ace was at best an alternative. Given the structure of the deal that got Cancelo to the club,  it makes sense Barcelona opted for the Portuguese ace given the financial concerns at the club.

Friminpong’s strong start to the current campaign acts as a reminder to all clubs that the youngster is a player to watch out for. Should Leverkusen go on to do the unthinkable, the 22-year-old will have a big role to play in it.

Whether Barcelona or Manchester United will rekindle their interest in the future remains to be seen. For now, the player continues to impress in the Bundesliga and make a name for himself.
