Jorge Mendes reportedly offered Real Madrid the chance to sign Sporting CP’s Pedro Goncalves, whose release clause is €80 million this summer.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Jorge Mendes offered Pedro Goncalves to Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. The Portuguese international has a release clause worth €80 million. But Sporting CP would have accepted a bid worth around €40 million. However, Florentino Perez rejected the chance to sign the player.
Pedro Goncalves has established himself as one of the best players in the Primeira Liga since joining Sporting CP from Famalicao in August 2020. The 25-year-old arrived at the Jose Alvalade Stadium after an excellent 2019/20 season. And he has become a talismanic figure for Sporting, taking over Bruno Fernandes’s mantle at the club.
The Portuguese international has also earned regular call-ups to his national side but is yet to become a pivotal figure for the Seleccao. Nonetheless, Pote has amassed 59 goals and 34 assists in 133 appearances for Sporting CP. But he faces an uncertain future at the Jose Alvalade Stadium this past summer.
Several high-profile clubs showed interest in the player, hoping to secure his services. The player’s release clause of €80 million did not detract most suitors either, apart from some like Aston Villa. Meanwhile, Jorge Mendes offered the 25-year-old Portuguese international to Real Madrid as they scoured the market for an attacker.
Sporting CP would have accepted a bid in the region of €40 million, making him an attractive proposition. In addition, Pote’s ability to reprise central and wide roles made him an alluring target. But Real Madrid did not take up Jorge Mendes’s offer to secure the player’s services in the summer transfer window.
Florentino Perez was happy with Real Madrid’s offensive unit despite not replacing Karim Benzema. The Merengues view Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes as the attacking solution for this season. So, Real Madrid politely declined the opportunity to sign the 25-year-old Spanish international.

Meanwhile, Pedro Goncalves remains a popular figure in the market, with Aston Villa still interested in him. But a move to Real Madrid will not see the light of day after they rebuffed Mendes’s approach this past summer.
