Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United have opened talks to extend the contract of their 31-year-old centre-back Fabian Schar.
According to a report by Football Insider, Newcastle United have opened talks to extend the contract of Fabian Schar. The 31-year-old centre-back is an integral part of Eddie Howe’s plans moving ahead and the Magpies are keen on extending his stay at the club.
Schar joined Newcastle United back in the summer of 2018 from Deportivo La Coruna for a fee of just £3 million. He has since gone from strength to strength and currently, he is an important part of their first team.
Despite the takeover and heavy investment into the team, Schar has still managed to keep his place in the team and has been putting in impressive performances on a consistent basis.
Overall, he has featured in 145 matches for the Magpies and even has 16 goal contributions. Last season, he was ever-present in Eddie Howe’s defence. The Swiss international started in 36 out of 38 Premier League games for Newcastle.
The 31-year-old played an important role in helping them finish inside the top four and return to the Champions League after the ages. With the Magpies all set to compete in the UCL for the first time in 20 years, Schar is expected to play an important role.
With Sven Botman out injured and expected to miss their opening Champions League fixture against AC Milan, Schar will be quite important to Howe’s plans.
In general, he is quite a reliable player in that setup. And, with his contract expiring next summer, they are looking to extend his stay at the club. His last extension came in 2022 when he penned down a two-year deal. The 31-year-old is expected to be offered a similar deal this time around.
The Magpies have opened talks with the player’s representatives over a new deal. The talks are expected to carry on for the next few months. Given the importance of the player under Howe, Newcastle are expected to get it done before the start of the winter transfer window.
