Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United are reportedly looking to sign 19-year-old Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva in 2024.
According to a report by Fichajes, Manchester United are looking to further bolster their squad next summer. They are looking to sign Antonio Silva from Benfica. Since the arrival of Erik ten Hag at the club, the Red Devils have spent millions on signing new players, and the trend is expected to continue in 2024.
Manchester United were in all sorts of trouble when Erik ten Hag took charge last summer. The former Ajax manager made a few key signings and managed to steady the ship. He eventually ended up winning a trophy and managed to finish inside the top four.
With the Red Devils now in the UEFA Champions League, they decided to go big in the market to be able to compete in both the league as well as in Europe. Manchester United ended up signing Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana and Sofyan Amrabat this past summer.
These arrivals have further strengthened them, and they are expected to fight for every title. While they will look to do their best, there are a few key areas where ten Hag wants more competition. And, the heart of the defence is one of the positions where he wants further reinforcement.
Ten Hag is looking for more competition and believes adding Antonio Silva will make them more complete. The teenage defender has been on their radar for a while now. The Portugal international could surely compete for a starting spot alongside Lisandro Martínez and Raphael Varane.
Silva has come through the ranks at Benfica, and he made it to their first team last summer. The 19-year-old sensation has gone from strength to strength since gaining promotion. His exceptional performances have resulted in him featuring for the Portugal national team.
Last season, he was involved in 44 matches and was on the pitch for around 4,000 minutes. He even contributed towards five goals. Despite being a teenager, he has already proven himself in the Portuguese league, the Champions League as well as at the international level.
As a result, the 19-year-old will surely bolster the Manchester United defence. But, with four years still left on his deal at Benfica, the Portuguese club are in the driving seat and it will be interesting to see how much they ask for the services of the teenage sensation.
