Sofyan Amrabat set for Manchester United medical, agreement close

Manchester United are reportedly set to sign Sofyan Amrabat as the Fiorentina midfielder has been given the “green light” to “undergo a medical”.

According to Football Insider, Manchester United have finally found a breakthrough in negotiations with Fiorentina for Sofyan Amrabat. And the Moroccan international has now been given the green light to undergo a medical after a long-running saga that may have finally come to an end. The Serie A club want £30 million to part ways with him.

This comes after Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano provided a positive update on Manchester United’s hopes of landing Amrabat earlier on the day. The transfer guru revealed the Red Devils consider the Moroccan midfielder their “top target” and are set to send an official opening offer to Fiorentina before the end of the day.

It was reported on Wednesday that Manchester United had already made a loan offer for Amrabat. The Athletic argued this was the only type of package United’s current economic situation could afford, with the club limited by Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

Unsurprisingly, the proposal was rejected out of hand by Fiorentina, although talks between the two clubs have continued. The Italian outfit value Amrabat at £30 million and would prefer a sale but are also open to a loan with an obligation.

Italian reporter Alfredo Pedulla further complicated matters, revealing the Italian side had already accepted an offer from Nottingham Forest, worth in excess of £20 million with add-ons, for the Moroccan enforcer. Amrabat has reportedly turned down this offer, however, with his sights set firmly on a move to Old Trafford.

Romano refuted the contrasting reports of a loan offer from Manchester United, claiming that “no loan proposal” has been sent to Fiorentina. He does reveal the Italian outfit could be “open” to such a move, provided it contains an “obligation to buy” based on certain conditions.

Football Insider are now claiming that Manchester United have made a breakthrough in their bid to sign the Fiorentina midfielder. A deal is seemingly edging closer as Amrabat has been given the go-ahead by La Viola to travel to Manchester for talks and a medical.

The Red Devils have been linked with the Morocco international all summer but have spent the majority of the transfer window strengthening other areas of Erik ten Hag’s squad. But despite spending in excess of £170 million, ten Hag always had plans to add another midfielder before the window shut. And talks over a deal for Amrabat have ramped up in recent days.

Amrabat’s contract with Fiorentina expires in one year, although the Italian outfit hold the option to extend it by another season if they want. Although Football Insider have not disclosed details about the structure of United’s operation, a loan offer with an obligation to buy included would represent a win-win situation for the two clubs.

Manchester United would secure their long-term midfield target on an initial loan while also working around their immediate FFP concerns. Fiorentina would offload a player who is eager to leave. But based on easily achievable performance terms, would recoup a transfer fee at the end of the season.
