Liverpool have internally discussed the prospect of signing ‘Casemiro-like’ Douglas Luiz before the transfer deadline.
According to Ben Jacobs on Give Me Sport, Liverpool have held internal discussions about Douglas Luiz. The Aston Villa star only signed a new contract last year, and they will demand a massive fee for the Brazilian. Alternatively, they will refuse like last season and continue with the 25-year-old.
Liverpool still lack depth in their midfield areas, and Jurgen Klopp will try to bring reinforcements before the window shuts. The German manager is running out of time in this transfer market, as he may not have the full set of players to last the whole season.
The Merseysiders have considered multiple options in the market and even ceded pursuit of Andre after Fluminense rejected their latest proposal. They did sign Wataru Endo, the Japanese midfielder from VfB Stuttgart. But he seems more like a squad option and a short-term solution.
Klopp did not envisage the sudden departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in addition to James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The raft of exits has rendered them without proper depth and cost them experience-wise.
Crystal Palace’s Cheick Doucoure also remains on their radar, while they have not kept up in the chase for Frenchmen Manu Kone and Khephren Thuram. With the window shrinking fast, Liverpool must find a solution in the market and sign a new midfielder to get their season going.
Ryan Gravenberch also remains an option, and Klopp might jump at the idea of the Dutchman if Bayern are open to a sale. They have added Douglas Luiz as part of the list, but convincing Aston Villa is a challenge.
Journalist Ben Jacobs insisted Liverpool held internal discussions about ‘Casemiro-like’ Luiz and the prospect of signing the midfielder. He said,”Yeah, Douglas Luiz is a name that has been discussed internally by Liverpool. I’m not aware of any movement at this point.”
“I think that it’s crystal clear that Liverpool wants to add between now and the end of the window if the right name becomes available. I would still keep an eye on Ryan Gravenberch because he’s a long-standing Liverpool target, and the player is keen on the move.”
Aston Villa faced a similar situation last summer on deadline day when Arsenal put in a series of bids for the 25-year-old Brazilian international. The Birmingham side did not hesitate to reject each of them despite the player having just a year left on his deal.
After that, Luiz penned a new contract with Villa in October 2022, which gives the club more power to keep hold of their star. Unai Emery has preferred the 25-year-old in his midfield and will continue to count on him for the season.
