Marco Silva’s Fulham are reportedly eyeing a late move for versatile Leicester City defender Timothy Castagne.
Fulham are still interested in signing Leicester City full-back Timothy Castagne. That is according to a report from Football Insider, which says that initial talks over a deal for the 27-year-old have already taken place.
This is not the first time that Fulham have been linked with a move for Castagne since Leicester City’s relegation from the Premier League to the Championship at the end of last season.
Back in July, the Cottagers, along with Premier League rivals Crystal Palace and Arsenal, were interested in a move for Castagne. However, no deal has yet materialised for the Belgium international, who is currently still on the books at the King Power Stadium. Now, though, it seems there is a possibility that the situation could still change before the transfer market closes at the end of this month.
The 27-year-old joined Leicester City from Serie A side Atalanta back in the summer of 2020. Since then, Castagne has gone on to make 112 appearances across all competitions for the East Midlands club, scoring five goals and providing eight assists in the process.
He signed a five-year deal with the club when he joined, meaning that he is under contract for another two seasons. But it looks like he will be on the move in the coming days. The right-back has yet to make a single first-team appearance for Leicester since the start of this season, further hinting that his future lies away from the club.
Football Insider claims the Cottagers, loaded with cash from Aleksandar Mitrovic’s big-money sale, are “planning to sign a full-back on each side of their defence.” Should they strike a deal for Castagne for a reasonable price, this would go down as yet another shrewd piece of business, given there’s little financial risk involved.
It is a high-floor, low-ceiling move, with the Belgian international adding another layer of solidity and versatility to Fulham’s defensive depth chart. Even though he will not be the most inspiring of arrivals, as he is far from spectacular at both ends of the pitch, he surely is a dependable option who notched the most Premier League minutes in an albeit porous Leicester team in 2022/23 as they succumbed to the second tier.
Many lauded his steady consistency to bombard up and down the touchline during his early days at Leicester. And under the right support and supervision from Marco Silva, the former Atalanta defender would be an excellent addition, and he would definitely provide Kenny Tete competition for the starting spot.
