Tottenham Hotspur captain Harry Kane is reportedly “hesitating” over a move to Bayern Munich despite the Bundesliga champions finally agreeing a €100 million deal with Spurs.
Transfer expert Florian Plettenberg has refused to rule out the prospect of Harry Kane staying at Tottenham this summer, despite having a verbal agreement over a move with Bayern Munich.
This comes after reports that Spurs have finally reached an agreement with Bayern Munich over the sale of their captain after a long-drawn saga. With just a few days to go until the start of the Premier League season, Spurs are understood to have accepted a package worth over €100 million, having rejected a series of bids in recent weeks.
Bayern have been pursuing the England captain all summer long, with Kane entering the final 12 months of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. With a fee agreed between the clubs, the decision over a move is down to Kane himself and whether or not he wants to make the move after all.
While it initially appeared as though he was unwilling to extend his current deal at the North London club and was pushing for a move to Bayern, recent reports have suggested that Kane is still very undecided about what his next step should be, which could delay the transfer further and leave it hanging in the balance.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who was the first to break the news that Bayern Munich’s latest offer for Kane had been accepted by Spurs, claimed that the England striker is “leaning towards staying” at Tottenham after being impressed by new manager Ange Postecoglou.
Now, renowned German football journalist Plettenberg has backed the aforementioned claims, suggesting that Kane could reject the massive move to Bayern, and it’s a “50/50” decision for the player.
The 30-year-old, a three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner, has spent his whole career at Spurs, becoming their all-time leading scorer with 280 goals across all competitions. He has 213 Premier League goals and is just 48 shy of breaking Alan Shearer’s record tally.
He’s also England’s leading scorer with 58 goals but has been frustrated at not winning any trophies. Bayern have a strong tradition of winning in Germany as well as Europe, having won 11 Bundesliga titles in a row and winning their sixth European Cup in 2020.
It’s also worth noting that this scenario won’t help Spurs’ cause either. Unless Kane signs a new contract with the Lilywhites, he will be a free agent next year if he does not move on now, and he will likely have his pick of teams, including Premier League clubs.
Spurs, for one, are reluctant to lose their talisman for nothing in the summer of 2024, and losing him to Premier League rivals like Manchester United or Arsenal would be a bitter pill to swallow. More or less, they have got what they demanded from Bayern.
Transfer windows are tricky beasts at the best of times, but what we are witnessing this summer in respect of this entire Kane to Bayern Munich saga is nothing short of a pendulum swing. Mixed signals, rejected bids, deadlines not respected, and whatnot. It remains to be seen just how this intriguing, and nail-biting transfer opera is going to end, but it’s safe to say that Kane holds all the cards.
