Aston Villa interested in Matej Kovar

Aston Villa are interested in taking 23-year-old Manchester United academy graduate Matej Kovar to add to their goalkeeping depth.

According to Daily Mail, Aston Villa are looking to sign 23-year-old Manchester United academy graduate Matej Kovar. Considering his Aston Villa side play on multiple fronts, Unai Emery will want to bolster his goalkeeping depth for the upcoming season.

Aston Villa have done considerable business in this window, with Unai Emery the driving force behind the transfer ideas. Pau Torres, Moussa Diaby and Youri Tielemans have upgraded several positions for the Spaniard, with the club not done yet with their dealings.

They have let a few players leave, but no one downgraded their squad quality ahead of the new campaign. Now, Aston Villa are keen to plug necessary gaps in their side, with Emery keen on adding goalkeeping depth.

Emi Martinez, despite many rumours of a departure in the summer, has remained at the club. He will continue as their No.1 for the upcoming season, with experienced Swede Robin Olsen his deputy. Incidentally, those two are the only keepers in the squad as things stand, and hence Emery wants another to add to the depth.

They have eyes on 23-year-old Manchester United academy graduate Matej Kovar. The Czech goalkeeper spent considerable time playing in the youth teams and the previous season on loan to Sparta Prague. He did have a good campaign, keeping eight clean sheets in 23 games while conceding only 24 times.

Whether he would like to move there remains the question, as Sparta Prague could guarantee him ample playing team as their regular No.1. However, the interest from Aston Villa might open a few doors for him, as he could become a part of their first-team squad.

Considering the tall pecking order at Manchester United, Kovar has never achieved that feat. He might have come close occasionally but never debuted for the Red Devils. With the club signing Andre Onana from Inter Milan, the path has grown even stronger.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are keen on Zion Suzuki, the Japanese keeper, who could usurp any chances that Kovar might fight for. Hence, the path at the club seems difficult, although he could gain first-hand experience at Aston Villa. He might also play an odd game in a cup competition, boosting his chances for the future.

At Manchester United, they are trying to stabilise their goalkeeping department after what seems like a total overhaul in the window. David De Gea has already left, while Dean Henderson remains linked with a move to Nottingham Forest.

As for Aston Villa, they might angle a very cheap deal for Kovar in the coming days. Emery will find the addition useful, considering the added pressure on his keeper following their entry into the Europa Conference league for the upcoming season.
