West Ham United are all set to drop their interest in the services of 30-year-old Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.
According to a report by The Athletic, West Ham United were interested in the services of Harry Maguire. The Hammers had even placed an initial bid for his services but it was rejected by the Red Devils. And, they are unlikely to place a second bid for the 30-year-old centre-back.
West Ham have been active in the transfer window throughout the summer but haven’t signed a single player so far. They parted ways with their skipper Declan Rice a few weeks back. Even before the 2022-23 season ended, it was pretty certain that the England international would leave the club and he has finally left to join Arsenal.
His departure has left a huge void in the centre of the park but it has also given them a financial boost that could be used to strengthen their squad. But, they haven’t been able to utilise it so far. They have submitted bids for quite a few players but all their offers have been rejected.
While their priority has been to reinforce their midfield, the Hammers are also keen on bolstering their defence. One of their targets is the former Manchester United skipper Maguire who was recently relieved of captaincy by manager Erik ten Hag.
The 30-year-old England international has fallen way down the pecking order since the arrival of the Dutch manager. Even regular full-back Luke Shaw was preferred to pay as centre-back ahead of the former Leicester City defender in a few fixtures last season.
His situation at Manchester United is unlikely to improve and they are ready to offload him. The Red Devils are looking to get him off their wage bill but there isn’t much interest in the 30-year-old’s services.
West Ham were keen on having him in their ranks but their initial offer was way below the valuation of the Red Devils. The Hammers submitted a bid worth £20 million which was quickly rejected. Their manager David Moyes wants to add the 30-year-old to his ranks but they might not push again for his services.
The England international’s wages are a major concern for the Hammers. And, they can’t really afford to offer him a contract that matches his current deal at United. Meanwhile, it is still unclear if he would be keen to make the move. As a result, Maguires’ transfer to West Ham might not happen in the ongoing window.
