Arsenal could yet bring in a new central defender, with Perr Schuurs one of the names on their list if Mikel Arteta decides on another addition.
According to Give Me Sport, Perr Schuurs is a name on Arsenal’s list of potential targets for this summer. The Torino star has been linked with a move to the Premier League, but Mikel Arteta’s reported interest could come as a surprise, as the team looks defensively sound.
Perr Schuurs has become a key player for Torino with his performances from last season. The 23-year-old defender can leave the Serie A side if a sizeable offer arrives from elsewhere. He might prefer to sign for a Premier League club, and there’s considerable interest.
Crystal Palace were interested in him, and there were links to Liverpool as well. However, since those early reports, the trail for Schuurs has gone somewhat cold until the latest links to Arsenal. The Gunners were keen to add a new defender before the window began, but they may have fulfilled their requirement already.
Arsenal have agreed on a fee with Ajax for Jurrien Timber, who will likely become their third summer signing. The profile of the Dutchman allows Arteta some versatility at the back, with the 22-year-old able to play as a right-back and centrally.
With his arrival, Arsenal’s defensive ranks seem complete unless there’s a surprise exit before the transfer window closes. For instance, PSG are interested in Gabriel Magalhaes, and if the Brazilian departs, then Arteta will surely target a new defender.
The chances of that happening are slim now, negating the links to Schuurs. The 23-year-old is a good player and might end up suiting Arsenal, but there’s nothing to suggest Arteta might look to bring in a new centre-back.
For now, Arsenal have completed their primary business and will move to the next phase: selling their existing stars. Granit Xhaka is close to signing for Bayer Leverkusen, while the likes of Folarin Balogun and Rob Holding are among others who could depart.
Hence, the Schuurs links are nothing more than a rumour at this stage, as Arteta might target a new midfielder if Thomas Partey leaves rather than a new defender. The 23-year-old could yet move out of Torino, considering some Premier League sides could reignite their interest.
