Arsenal have reached an agreement with Ajax to acquire the services of 22-year-old centre-back Jurrien Timber.
According to The Athletic, Arsenal have finally reached an agreement to sign Jurrien Timber. The Gunners have been keen on acquiring the 22-year-old’s services for a while now and have finally struck a deal with Ajax for his transfer.
Arsenal were leading the 2022-23 Premier League title race right until the end but they fell short. The Gunners ran out of gas and squad depth was one of the reasons. With the club all set to return to the Champions League, Mikel Arteta has been handed a decent purse to work with and he is making full use of it.
The Spanish boss has already signed Kai Havertz from Chelsea and soon they will announce the signing of Declan Rice from West Ham United for a club-record fee of over €100 million. With attack and midfield almost sorted, Arteta’s focus of late has been on his defence and he is keen on having Timber in his ranks.
The Gunners have been in talks with the Dutch club for the 22-year-old’s services for quite a while now. They already have a verbal agreement on personal terms with the player and their focus has been on striking a deal with the club.
Arsenal had put forward a bid of around €35 million for the Dutch international a few weeks back but Ajax were not ready to lower their asking price of over €40 million.
As a result, the Gunners had to up their bid and meet the demands of Ajax as they were desperate to have the Dutch centre-back in their ranks. Arsenal had a verbal agreement with the club and they have finally reached full agreement with Ajax.
The fee involved in the deal is €40 million plus €5 million add-ons. The expectation is that the final fee will reach the €45 million mark as the bonuses included in the deal are quite realistic. With the agreement in place, Timber has been given the green signal to schedule his medical and finalise his personal agreement with the club.
