Jose Mourinho is keen to offer Mason Greenwood a career lifeline and make a loan approach to sign the striker this summer.
According to the The Sun, AS Roma could make a loan approach to sign Mason Greenwood on loan this summer. The striker remains suspended by Manchester United despite the Crown Prosecution Service dropping all charges in his case.
Mason Greenwood hasn’t kicked a ball since he was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault in January 2022. While he went through legal proceedings, the public opinion around the striker changed and went against him.
Many fans do not want to engage with Greenwood again despite his legal respite. Meanwhile, Manchester United immediately suspended the 21-year-old striker after his initial charges. Still, his status remains the same despite the Crown Prosecution Service dropping all charges in the case.
Earlier this year, when the charges were dropped, the club posted the following statement: “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.”
“The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”
Greenwood was recently snapped in a training session with a personal trainer on a rented pitch. It shows that the 21-year-old forward is ready to resume his footballing career and has a few clubs chasing his signature. The attacker still has a contract at Old Trafford until 2025, but Manchester United might look for a way out.
Juventus had shown an interest in the striker alongside AC Milan and Inter Milan. AS Roma have joined the chase and may have the upper hand with the presence of Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese manager seems destined to lead the Capital side for another season at least and requires a new striker.
The suggestion is that Mourinho knows the striker well from his days as Manchester United’s manager. He would need a forward next season, at least until January, as Tammy Abraham recovers from a long-term injury. The Roma boss could afford the perfect opportunity for Greenwood to revive his career and start afresh.
Roma could approach Manchester United with a loan offer in the coming period. A move might make sense for all parties concerned, allowing Greenwood to return to top-level football. The Red Devils might ponder over this approach.
Manchester United might feel that time away from the club will help settle matters and bring direction to Greenwood’s career. In truth, his Old Trafford career might have ended already. Any move away will only become possible once his suspension is revoked.
