Manchester United will have to fork out €20 million to acquire the services of FC Porto striker Mehdi Taremi.
According to O Jogo via Sport Witness, Manchester United are keen on having Mehdi Taremi in their ranks ahead of next season. The Red Devils are desperately looking for a new number nine and have their eyes set on the 30-year-old Iran international. And they can sign the unheralded striker for just €20 million.
Taremi joined FC Porto back in the summer of 2020, and he has not looked back since. The former Rio Ave FC forward has gone from strength to strength over the past few seasons. His numbers in the recently concluded season were absolutely sensational.
The 30-year-old featured in a total of 51 matches, finding the back of the net on 31 occasions and also created 14 goals for his teammates. His 22 league goals helped him with the Liga Portugal top scorer’s award. The Iran international’s performance in the 2022/23 season has attracted a lot of attention.
Bayern Munich and Manchester United are two clubs who are seriously considering pushing for his services in the summer. Taremi’s contract with the Portuguese club runs until the summer of 2024. While they do not really want to lose out on him, they do not have many options to work with. They cannot risk losing out on him for free next summer.
As a result, the club are ready to negotiate his departure but they will only let him leave for a fee of over €20 million. While the clubs interested will look to lower the asking price, Porto are unlikely to entertain any such demands as they will only receive 85% of the transfer. The remaining 15% of the transfer fee will go to the player.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have been on the lookout for a new striker for a while now. Erik ten Hag’s priority is to sign a new number before heading into next season. The Red Devils have been heavily dependent on Marcus Rashford for goals and the Dutch manager wants to bring in someone who can share the load with the English forward.
While Manchester United are considering pushing for the services of Taremi, their priority is to sign a high profile world-class forward, with Rasmus Hojlund among the targets. However, given the goalscoring record of the 30-year-old, he can surely be a great addition to their ranks.
