Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly offered Bryan Gil in a player-plus-cash deal to sign Sevilla’s star goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
According to VAMOS MI SEVILLA, Tottenham have included winger Bryan Gil in a deal for Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou in order to make a package that nears his €30–35 million asking price.
Known simply as Bono, the 31-year-old Moroccan delivered a timely performance. He was the star of the show last week as Sevilla claimed their fifth Europa League trophy. The shot-stopper saved two penalties from Roma in the decisive shootout.
Bono initially joined Sevilla on a loan deal from Girona back in 2019, before becoming a permanent fixture at the Spanish club in 2020. Overall, the Moroccan has made 140 appearances for his current side across all competitions, keeping 58 clean sheets in the process.
However, it is his clutch performances in the Europa League that have made him a cult hero among the Sevillistas. He’s someone who, more often than not, steps up on big occasions under pressure.
With his latest heroics, Bono has brought back to mind those who had forgotten about him in recent months. The Moroccan international goalkeeper is once again in demand from all over, as he was after his exceptional World Cup campaign that saw his country make an unprecedented run to the semi-finals.
Spurs are eyeing a summer move for the shot-stopper after previously making contact with Sevilla to discover his price tag. The Lilywhites have not had to worry about bringing a new goalkeeper to the club for a decade, with Hugo Lloris having been firmly the club’s first choice since his arrival from Lyon in the summer of 2012.
Now, with the 36-year-old announcing his desire to leave Tottenham this summer after a poor domestic campaign between the sticks, Spurs are forced into the market to find a new No. 1. As per the report, it seems Daniel Levy and co. are happy to see the back of one of their own assets to make the Bono move happen.
The report suggests they are looking to include winger Gil in their small financial package so that the deal reaches somewhere near Bono’s price tag. The former Sevilla winger played a crucial part in their success on his loan return, making 24 appearances since joining on loan in January.
While the player has already bid farewell to the Andalusian club with a post on Instagram, coach Jose Luis Mendilibar is keen to bring him back to the club, if possible. It would be quite a piece of business from the Spanish side if they were to bring Gil back to the club.
They sold him to Tottenham for around £21 million in 2021, and as yet, he’s had little impact at the North London club and has mostly spent his time out on loan. Newly-appointed boss Ange Postecoglou is looking to have a clearout at Tottenham this summer, and one of the players apparently on the chopping list is Gil, who is viewed as a ‘saleable’ asset by the north Londoners.
Despite Spurs’ best efforts to include Gil in their Bono pursuit, Sevilla have rejected the proposal and will ask for around €30–35 million for the Moroccan star. Whether Tottenham counter back with a fresh offer for the World Cup semi-finalist remains to be seen.
