Axel Disasi is reportedly closing in on a move to Manchester United as a possible replacement for Harry Maguire.
According to L’Equipe, Axel Disasi could join Manchester United and become their replacement for Harry Maguire. The French international could leave AS Monaco for the right price, deemed to be €40-50 million, after an impressive season in Ligue 1.
Axel Disasi was a player of unknown quantity, at least in the media, before being selected for the France squad at the Qatar World Cup. The defender was a late call-up after Presnel Kimpembe withdrew through an injury. And the AS Monaco star made a few appearances in the tournament.
Meanwhile, his form at the club level has attracted a few clubs’ attention ahead of the summer. Manchester United had shown interest before and may have rekindled the chase. As per the report, Disasi prefers to join Erik ten Hag’s side and take a big step in his career.
Disasi featured across 37 Ligue 1 games and was a consistent figure. He also chipped in with three goals, and as many assists for Monaco. A towering figure at the back, he has also impressed in a right-back role in very few games he played in that position, notably for France at the World Cup.
By trade, the French international is a centre-back, and Manchester United are interested in him for that role. More specifically, they want him to replace Harry Maguire, who has his suitors ahead of a likely departure in the summer.
Monaco are open to selling the French international for €40-50 million. At 25, Disasi can become a long-term option. But whether he will come across as a starter for Manchester United remains the question. He can become a high-quality backup to Lisandro Martinez or compatriot Raphael Varane.
The report says Disasi has chosen Manchester United as his preferred club and could join them soon. However, the Red Devils are also pursuing Kim Min-jae from Napoli and have readied a financially lucrative offer for the South Korean.
Coming on the back of a solid, title-winning season with Napoli, one would expect Kim Min-jae to become a sure starter at Manchester United. Moreover, whether Ten Hag is open to spending significant amounts on two different centre-backs is also a big question considering there are more pressing needs in other positions.
This report cannot get the rumour treatment as the move can materialise. However, Manchester United might keep it as a contingent deal to the Kim Min-jae transfer, particularly if that falls through.
