AC Milan are interested in acquiring the services of 29-year-old Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic ahead of next season.
According to Calciomercatoweb, AC Milan are keen on having former Inter Milan star Mateo Kovacic in their ranks. The 29-year-old, who is one a €9 million-a-year deal, could part ways with Chelsea in the upcoming transfer window and the Serie A giants could push for his services.
Kovacic came into the limelight while playing for Inter Milan back in the day. His impressive performances resulted in a move to Real Madrid. While he did play a significant part at the Bernabeu, the 29-year-old was not a regular starter.
He was loaned out to Chelsea in the summer of 2018. The Croatian international had an impressive loan spell, and the Blues decided to make his move permanent in the following summer, handing him a €9 million-a-year contract.
Kovacic has gone from strength to strength since joining Chelsea. He has been the mainstay of their team over the years. The 29-year-old has featured in 36 matches in the ongoing season and has been involved in four goals.
While the Blues have signed numerous midfielders over the past few windows, the Croatian midfielder still remains an important part of their setup. However, his contract at the club runs out in the summer of 2024. And, with just over 12 months left in his contract, he could be on the move in the summer.
The West Londoners are unlikely to give him a contract extension as they will looking to offload a few of their players to make room for new ones. AC Milan are well aware of the situation and they are ready to push for his signatures.
Since Kovacic will only have 12 months left on his contract in the summer, Milan can expect to acquire him on the cheap. And, they are ready to bid around €15-18 million for his services. The Serie A giants want to strengthen their midfield ahead of next season.
They are in desperate need of a new midfielder post the injury to Ismael Bennacer who will be out for the first few months of next season. Bennacer and Sandro Tonali are a formidable duo in the centre of the park. But with the Algerian out injured, they need to look for a replacement. And, Paolo Maldini believes the former Inter Milan midfielder could help their cause.
The Chelsea midfielder can surely bolster the AC Milan squad. However, he is currently paid around €9 million per season, and it is impossible for Milan to match that figure. But, they can surely spread the salary over the long term to get a deal done. As a result, it will be interesting to see if Milan can land him at the club ahead of next season.
