Newcastle United are reportedly interested in AC Monza’s impressive full-back Carlos Augusto.
According to Calciomercato, Premier League side Newcastle United are interested in securing the services of Monza star Carlos Augusto in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Magpies are coming off an excellent season that could yet see them finish in the Premier League top four. Securing UEFA Champions League football would certainly boost their odds of attracting top talent once the transfer window opens.
One such player in their sights is Augusto, who has enjoyed a fine campaign in Serie A with Monza. The 24-year-old has made 32 appearances for the Italian club this season, scoring six goals and making five assists. The attacking output of 11 goal contributions is rather impressive given that Monza are far from being one of Serie A’s top sides.
In fact, his tally is only behind that of Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong across Europe’s top leagues. An excellent crosser of the ball, Augusto’s service could prove to be a blessing for Alexander Isak and co. It would boost Newcastle’s frontline in the coming years, adding another threat to their unglamorous yet solid squad.
Newcastle United have been outscored by the top seven sides in the Premier League bar Manchester United this season. In Isak, they already have a goalscorer. Improving service to the big Swede could make all the difference in the future.
Augusto is also a solid defender who can hold his own at the back. A strong tackler, he is also a capable presence in the air and should be able to hold his own in the Premier League landscape. He is also versatile enough to play at center-back if needed, adding another layer to his tactical flexibility.
A deal of around € 20 million is what Monza will expect for the Brazilian from interested parties. With Inter Milan and Juventus also in the fray, there is every reason that a bidding war should ensure. Newcastle certainly will not be on the backfoot should that happen. But the Magpies are also interested in several other left-backs, including Ferland Mendy.
Augusto is a far more dynamic presence at left-back and is an improvement over Jamal Lewis, Matt Targett, and Paul Dummett. At 24, the Brazilian has the best years of his career ahead of him and will only improve. He could very well mirror Newcastle’s development in the years to come.
