Liverpool could consider pushing for the services of 21-year-old Southampton centre-back Armel Bella-Kotchap ahead of next season.
According to Dean Jones via GiveMeSport, Liverpool could push for the services of Armel Bella-Kotchap in the summer. The 21-year-old has done a great job in the ongoing season, and he has been subject to a lot of interest from across Europe of late.
Bella-Kotchap joined the Saints ahead of the ongoing season from VFL Bochum. The English club paid around £10 million for the services of the 21-year-old centre-back. While the club have struggled in the ongoing season, the German international has managed to produce impressive performances in the heart of the defence.
The former Bochum defender has featured in 25 matches in the ongoing season for the Saints and also has two assists to his name. He has done a decent job in a rather struggling team.
Southampton are struggling for survival in the English top flight. They are currently bottom of the league with just 24 points out of their 34 matches. And, they are unlikely to avoid relegation. As a result, the 21-year-old could part ways with the Saints just a year after joining them.
Despite his team’s struggles, the 21-year-old has impressed one and all. His performances earned him his international debut for the German national team. And, there are quite a few clubs keen on having him in their ranks.
Jones said, “Liverpool would have had an eye on him before, I don’t know whether they would be looking to come back in for him, but they’ve been suitors before.”
Liverpool were interested in the centre-back even before he joined the Saints. And, they could return for his services in the summer. While their priority is to sign multiple midfielders in the summer, they are also on the look for a new defender.
Jurgen Klopp is not happy with Joel Matip’s performances in the heart of the defence. And, the Liverpool boss is looking to bring in a new defender. The club were interested in the 21-year-old back in the day and could be willing to bet on him.
If the Saints end up getting relegated, the German international could be available for a fee of around £17 million. It could be an absolute bargain for the Merseyside club and the FSG could be willing to take the risk.
