Barcelona closing in on sealing Lionel Messi agreement

Barcelona and Lionel Messi are advancing discussions to seal the 35-year-old’s return from Ligue 1 club PSG this summer.

According to Xavi Campos of Catalunya Radio, Lionel Messi might soon return to Barcelona. The negotiations between Barcelona and the 35-year-old have reached an advanced stage. And the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner, whose market value is €45 million, will likely return to Spotify Camp Nou in the summer transfer window if the Blaugrana can register him.

Lionel Messi is arguably the greatest player in history, sealing his status after guiding Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The diminutive wizard made his name during his 21-year stint with Barcelona. He won every trophy several times with the Blaugrana but saw his stint ending in disappointment two years ago.

The 35-year-old has also won the coveted Ballon d’Or the most times. And he reached the pinnacle of his illustrious career by winning the Copa America and the FIFA World Cup with Argentina. Meanwhile, Messi’s 2022/23 campaign has been phenomenal as he has racked up 20 goals and 19 assists in 36 appearances.

But Messi’s long-term future at PSG is uncertain, with his contract with the Ligue 1 champions expiring this summer. And the player, whose market value is €45 million, has several options on his table. One of his prospective destinations will be Barcelona, with the Blaugrana scrambling to secure his signature.

Joan Laporta has been vocal about bringing Messi back to Barcelona for several months. And recent reports have claimed that the Catalan giants are confident about re-signing the Argentine international. A summer deal might thus be on the cards, with the veteran playmaker open to rejoining the Blaugrana.

Xavi Campos has now suggested that discussions between Barcelona and Messi’s camp are advanced. And the 35-year-old revealed the same to Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba in a recent dinner. But a summer deal will be contingent on Barcelona’s ability to register the former club captain.

The Catalan giants are in a spot of bother on the financial front and need to lighten the wage bill before registering new players. But if that does not happen, the dream of re-signing Messi will likely end. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if the experienced attacker will return to Spotify Camp Nou this summer.
