Newcastle United are keen to sign €58 million Barcelona winger Raphinha, who could return to the Premier League.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Raphinha is a target for Newcastle United in the summer window. The €58 million Barcelona winger may not appear like a priority sale for the Catalans. Still, they are aware of the growing interest from the Premier League clubs, which could compel them to cash in.
Raphinha has had a modest season since making his dream move to Barcelona last summer. There was a three-way battle for the winger, with the Catalan giants, Arsenal and Chelsea vying for his signature. Ultimately, he signed for a club he preferred, with Barcelona paying around €58 million to Leeds United.
While he only had an average season, Barcelona are content with the Brazilian and want him on their side for the foreseeable future. However, their current financial state would need them to cull the wage bill by €200 million and bring in at least €100 million through player sales.
While Raphinha is not among those deemed surplus to requirements, Barcelona remain aware of Premier League clubs’ growing interest, including Arsenal and Chelsea. They might look at other players in their squad before turning on the Brazilian, although a transfer could materialise.
For starters, if Barcelona decide to sell Raphinha, they will certainly look to profit from their €58 million investment. Only a handful of clubs can pay up large sums for the 26-year-old winger. Newcastle United are considered among those, with Eddie Howe keen on the Brazilian.
Newcastle United were keen during his Leeds United days but knew of the player’s preference to join Barcelona. The Magpies will sense the opportunity ahead of the summer window to approach. They might even play in next season’s Champions League, which becomes a big factor in attracting top talents.
Raphinha would certainly want to continue with Barcelona. But he might return to the Premier League if the Blaugrana decide to sell him. While he will command a significant fee, Newcastle United could put their foot forward with a solid offer.
Howe will evaluate the futures of current wide attackers Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron. One or both could leave St. James’ Park in the summer, meaning they will want significant replacements in place. They are linked with many other prominent names. But if Raphinha becomes available, they will go all out on the €58 million Barcelona winger.
