Manchester United and Liverpool are eyeing up a summer move for 28-year-old Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic.
A report from 90min claims that Manchester United are keen on signing Mateo Kovacic at the end of the season. The 28-year-old Chelsea midfielder has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, with Liverpool also interested. But it seems unlikely that the Blues will let him join a direct rival.
Manchester United need to bring in a top-class midfielder alongside Casemiro if they want to challenge for the title next year. Kovacic has proven himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. And the Chelsea midfielder could prove to be an exceptional signing.
The 28-year-old will add control, composure and drive to the Manchester United midfield. The Croatian international is excellent when it comes to carrying the ball forward and playing out of the press. Recent reports have linked him with a departure from Chelsea.
Manchester United have struggled against high-pressing teams this season. And they need someone with agility who knows how to operate in tight spaces and evade the press. Kovacic would be an ideal acquisition for Erik ten Hag. Meanwhile, the Red Devils will face competition from arch-rivals Liverpool, who need someone like Kovacic as well.
The Reds need to add more energy, craft and composure to their midfield. The likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have regressed massively, and Kovacic would be a major upgrade. The Croat could form a quality partnership alongside midfielder Thiago Alcantara at Anfield next season.
The Reds have been linked with a number of other midfielders. So it remains to be seen whether they can convince Kovacic to join them. It is fair to assume that a player of his ability will want to join a Champions League club. So Liverpool will have to finish in the top four in order to sign him.
