Liverpool, Manchester City tracking Gavi situation at Barcelona

Liverpool and Manchester City are interested in signing 18-year-old Barcelona midfielder Gavi ahead of next season.

According to The Times, Liverpool and Manchester City are tracking the contract situation of Gavi. The 18-year-old has been in red-hot form ever since his promotion to the first team. And, there is a lot of interest in the Barcelona midfielder’s services.

Gavi started off at the Real Betis youth academy before joining Barcelona’s La Masia. He has been a part of the Catalan giants since the summer of 2015. The 18-year-old has gone up the ranks at the club and has become an integral part of Xavi’s team.

The Spanish international has made over 80 appearances for the Catalan giants and has 15 goal involvements. He was terrific at the FIFA World Cup 2022 for Spain. And as far as the ongoing season is concerned, the 18-year-old has featured in 36 matches and has seven goal contributions.

While the player is keen on staying at Barcelona, he might have to leave in the summer. The Catalan giants suffered a major blow when the Mercantile Court declared Gavi’s new contract null and void. The court said that the club had missed the deadline day.

Meanwhile, Gavi has become one of their most important players of late and was rewarded with a new contract in September worth €8 million per season. While there were a few concerns related to the contract, Barcelona eventually managed to register him as a part of the first team at the end of January through a court filing. The decision came in their favour and it seemed all sorted.

However, the same court has now declared the new contract null and void. It means Gavi is now back on his youth contract which ends in the summer. If Barcelona fail to take care of things in the coming months, he will be a free agent in the summer. But the latest reports suggest a twist in the tale, with his contract valid again.

Manchester City and Liverpool are aware of the situation related to Gavi’s new contract. Both clubs are on the lookout for a new central midfielder and would love to have him in their ranks. Ilkay Gundogan’s contract at Manchester City ends in the summer, and he might be on his way out. And, signing the 18-year-old Barcelona prospect can surely help them replace one of their midfielders.

Liverpool have suffered in the ongoing season, and a lot of it is because of inconsistent midfield. Jurgen Klopp is keen on a midfield overhaul in the summer. He is keen on signing a world-class midfielder in the summer, and Gavi can surely help his cause. However, it won’t be an easy task for either of the two clubs. Barcelona will try to manage their finances and get a deal sorted for Gavi to stay at the club.
