La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly considering signing 20-year-old South American midfielder Fabricio Diaz this summer.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Fabricio Diaz is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Blaugrana monitored the 20-year-old midfielder at the Under-20 South American Championships. And Liverpool FC Montevideo will demand around €6 million to part ways with the youngster.
Fabricio Diaz has spent his formative years in his homeland thus far. The Uruguayan whizkid first joined La Paz Wanderers before moving to Liverpool FC Montevideo in 2016. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength and is now a regular for Negriazules Los negros de la cuchilla.
The 20-year-old was recently in action at the Under-20 South American Championships. He captained Uruguay while scoring five goals and providing two assists in eight appearances. In addition, Diaz has become a regular for Liverpool FC Montevideo. The youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed either, with Barcelona among his prospective suitors.
Barcelona will likely dip into the market for a holding midfielder in the summer transfer window. That is because Sergio Busquets is approaching the final phase of his glittering career. And the Barcelona captain might even depart from Spotify Camp Nou at the end of the season.
Several midfielders have thus emerged on Barcelona’s radar, with Martin Zubimendi the priority target for Xavi Hernandez. But the Spaniard will be too expensive. And amid claims from Javier Tebas that he will not allow Barcelona to make signings this summer, spending €60 million on Zubimendi is unlikely.
So Barcelona will have to identify cost-effective alternatives to Zubimendi, with Marcelo Brozovic emerging as a target. And Fabricio Diaz has now popped up on their radar. The South American midfielder will not be expensive either, with Liverpool FC Montevideo demanding €6 million for him.
The 20-year-old can thus be a viable long-term successor to Busquets after showing promise in his short professional career. But it will be interesting to see if Diaz becomes the top target for Barcelona this coming summer. For now, the youngster has emerged as a potential candidate to bolster the midfield unit.
