Newcastle United join Denzel Dumfries race

Newcastle United could target Denzel Dumfries to come in and add competition to the squad next season.

According to La Repubblica, Newcastle United have joined the race for Denzel Dumfries. The Inter Milan star could be sold next summer following some financial troubles with the Italian side. Eddie Howe faces plenty of competition for the 26-year-old Serie A ace, with Chelsea among those keen.

Denzel Dumfries is steadily becoming a name on the radar of many Premier League clubs. Plenty of teams need a new right-back next summer, and the Dutchman has impressed for Inter Milan.

Inter acquired Dumfries in August 2021 after paying just over €14 million to PSV Eindhoven. The 26-year-old Serie A ace has played at a high level since moving out of the Netherlands.

Chelsea have been on his trail for the best part of two windows. The Blues could return with an offer in the summer after refusing to entertain Inter Milan’s huge demands in January. They, alongside Tottenham, reportedly held meetings with Dumfries’s agent in London but to no avail.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa were credited with an interest, with Unai Emery keen to sign Dumfries. The club have the financial means to execute such a deal. But the 26-year-old Serie A ace will have plenty of other suitors playing European football.

Newcastle United are the latest to join the race for Dumfries. Eddie Howe has been in the market to sign a player capable of complementing and competing with Kieran Trippier. The English full-back was a transformational purchase in January 2022, but Howe needs someone to rotate with the 32-year-old.

Newcastle brought in Harrison Ashby from West Ham United in January. But there are doubts about whether he is ready to compete at the highest level. The Magpies will likely qualify for a European competition, which Howe will hope is the Champions League.

They would need someone to rotate with Trippier. And a top-quality player like Dumfries would make sense. Newcastle are not expected to pay over the odds, but they have the financial capabilities to execute the deal. There could be further departures in the summer, meaning squad space would not be a problem.

Newcastle United will have to manoeuvre through intense competition for Dumfries. Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester United could also come in for the 26-year-old Serie A ace, but the Magpies can make a case for themselves in the chase.
